Mimi and Shaun drove off in the Big Orange Jeep about an hour ago. Mimi thought that they were headed to the store to get a light fixture to put into my dismally dark studio a surprise for me. But in reality, the surprise is for Mimi.
They are headed east to Cour d’Alene, Idaho to visit our niece Tomi and her adorable family. Tomi is going to be surprised too. We did called her Mom, who lives in Alaska, and asked her to make sure, in a very subtle way, that it would be a good time to visit.
Shaun called just a few minutes ago. Mimi somehow managed to figure out that they were not headed into town to get a light fixture. (Smart kid, eh?) In a very Mimi-like manner, she started pestering her dad about where they were going. She has never been one to be satisfied with a vague “It’s a surprise” answer. She needs to know things!
As a hint, Shaun pulled out her DS. She just looked at him quizzically, then guessed that it was going to be a long trip. When Shaun replied that it would take about five hours she lit up and guessed that they were headed to Tomi’s. Apparently, when she finally got the truth out of her dad, our little girl squealed and squeezed him so tight he nearly lost control of the Jeep.
Then she started thinking again. (Yep, she’s always thinkin’) She thoughtfully turned off her phone because the battery was almost dead. That’s when Shaun whipped out the battery charger that I had snuck to him on the way out the door. Then she wanted to know where she could plug it in at. Shaun informed her that he had hotel reservations to use if it wouldn’t hurt Tomi’s feelings too much. (Shaun has a thing about staying in other people’s homes) Then Mimi wanted to know how long they were staying. When she found out it was for two days, she sighed and said wistfully that she wished that she had her bathing suit. She was astounded when she learned that I had packed her a full suitcase to take care of her every need.
They are going to have a wonderful Daddy-Daughter bonding time with Mimi’s Big Surprise…

What a wonderful surprise for her. Kudos to you for managing to keep it a surprise for as long as you did…but a 5 hour drive would be a bit too long with such an inquisitive kid, wouldn’t it? 😉
That sounds like an awesome surprise! What a great family life you all have! It’s inspiring to see. I grew up with a wonderful family like yours, but its not all that common, unfortunately.
How exciting for her! Hope they had a blast!
