Daily Drama #256

A  phone call at 6:45 in the morning is never a good thing.

As I reached for the phone, I breathed a small sigh of relief when I saw that it was one of Mimi’s friends. In a quiet voice, she asked to speak to Mimi, then whispered to me who she was.  (As if I didn’t know the sound of her voice!)  I thought she was being a little stranger than usual, but just mentally shrugged and handed the phone over to my bleary-eyed daughter.

When Mimi started making sympathetic noises and exclaiming “how awful it was” and that she was “so sorry that happened”, I assumed that  her friend had some sort of glitch with the project that had half the eighth graders staying up for most of the night.  I was just slightly more confused (but not really surprised) when Mimi started telling her friend about the funeral we had had for one of KT’s fish a few years ago.

When Mimi hung up, she turned to me and said “Mom… she’s crying really hard and I don’t know what I’m supposed to do.”  Now I was really perplexed as the child that I had just spoken to, was no where near tears.  I asked what was going on with her friend.

Mimi  let out and exasperated sigh and blurted out “I don’t see what the big deal is.  It’s not like she had it very long or anything.  She’s crying because her goldfish died!”

The one thing that stands out about this situation, is that a year ago my little girl would’ve bought into the drama and have  been howling right along with her friend at the huge tragedy that had occurred.   My baby girl is growing up….

  1. Tink says:

    So the new saying goes…

    Don’t cry over dead fish.

  2. Jay says:

Poor little goldfish! He’s in goldfish heaven now I’m sure.

  3. Karina says:

OH boy, didn’t her parents tell her friend that fish die pretty easily? Poor kid.

Glad your daughter seems to have perspective on the situation.

  4. Kell says:

She’s got a pretty good handle on that smile.

Poor little thing losing her goldfish. Goldfish? Poor Mimi, too.

  5. Elisabeth says:

Aw man, I wanted a redhead! I got 4 adorable brunettes… but I secretly always wanted a redhead!

    Sorry about Goldie!

  6. Keshi says:

hehe cute..I used to cry over dead fish too..when I was abt 6-7yrs old. It breaks ur heart somehow..

  7. Pamela says:

I think a Heron is snitching our gold fish.
I’m thinking about crying too. They are a very expensive lunch for a bird.

    lovely girl… lovely lovely.

  8. giveitatry says:

She called at 6:45 AM for THAT? I am so insensitive….

    I like the fake smile!

  9. Peggy says:

The friend of Mimi sounds like a silly thing. Calling somebody’s house at that hour for a fish? It is good to see that Mimi has sense BUT a kind heart. She was so good to her friend even though she didn’t really sympathise.

  10. Karina mentioned how her parents should have told her that fish die easily and I agree. But, what they really should have told her is that you don’t call people at 6:45am without a better reason than that!

    Mimi is beautiful 🙂

  11. Hilary says:

Aww probably (hopefully) a first loss for that child. And girls are often pretty melodramatic to begin with. Poor thing couldn’t see outside of those feelings. I think it’s called Carp Tunnel Syndrome. 😉

    (sorry.. couldn’t resist)

Your daughter is a beauty. 🙂

  12. Marla says:

Your daughter handled that very well 🙂

  13. It might be a fake smile, but it’s a great one.

  14. Kari says:

She’s so cute!! Lucky girl, no ugly duckling stage for her jr. high years! Unfair.

  15. Susan says:

    Tink~you crack me up!

Jay~I’ve been told it was actually a beta. Is there such a thing as Beta Heaven?

Karina~I’m sure they did. She’s just a very emotional child.

Kell~She’s so funny, she does this wierd little pucker thing to warm up before she smiles

Carol~Next temper tantram, I’ll send her down to you!

Keshi~It’ always hard to lose something you love…even a fish

Pamela~maybe you should downgrade to feeder fish??? 🙂

Giveitatry~It’s early, but as they all had to be on the bus in half an hour, it wasn’t like she would be waking anyone up. Except for Shaun…he’s not up for hours after that…

Peggy~She does have a really kind heart. That’s one of the things I love best about Mimi.

    Guily~Thank you!

    Hilary~I LOVE your puns!!

    Marla~She did, didn’t she?

W~Yeah but her REAL one is amazing!

Kari~Huh, I hadn’t thought about it, but she never has been really funny looking…

  16. Jenster says:

And she’s growing up to be so pretty!!

  17. Kristina says:

    Haha…that was a great build-up! 🙂

  18. Jocelyn says:

Good Lord, that Mimi is attractive.

And I love her newly-forged pragmatism…about the mortality of fish, at least.

  19. Dorky Dad says:

I got a little weepy when I had to bring my hamster to the vet to be put to sleep, but a goldfish? I’m with Mimi on that one.

  20. Keshi says:

    LOL @fake smile!
