A midwinter trip to the beach

We’ve been on mid-winter break this week.   I have no idea why we have mid-winter break,  but after ten years of it, I’m finally starting to accept it…and perhaps even embrace it.

We couldn’t have better weather for it.  The sun has been shining in a clear blue sky and the temperature has risen into the 50’s. It seems as though everyone is enjoying this unexpected summer-like weather in the Great Outdoors.

Shaun had taken today off and we decided that we were going to take a day trip to the coast. The Washington coast is much different from the coast of  Southern California.  For one thing, in CA, the beach was only minutes away from us.  Today, we drove for nearly three hours before we came to the Pacific Ocean.

Another major difference is temperature.  In San Diego, we thought the beach was freezing in February.  Up here in the Great Northwest, we know it is.  KT wasn’t happy  until she was wearing all three of the jackets that she had brought with her.  (And even then, her teeth were still chattering)

Please excuse my awful photos.  Apparently The Beast is still upset that I haven’t even picked it up in weeks.  I don’t have a single decent photo, but I’m posting some anyways…

KT may have been cold, but the dogs were ecstatic to have a chance to play on the beach! As soon as Shaun drove onto the sand, (yes you can drive on the beach here!) they began to put up a huge fuss.  We were amazed that they still remembered what the beach was!

You can tell that’s our Big Dog, Shelly…can’t you?

We stood along the shoreline for a few minutes, then we were pretty much ready to go.  (I felt a bit like the Griswolds at the Grand Canyon).  That was until Mimi decided to amuse us by having a teenagery moment.

I’m still not sure what she was upset about, but she created a circle, climbed in and pouted.  Naturally, we all respected her wishes and left her alone stepped into her circle to mess with her because we didn’t want her to feel lonely.

For some reason, she was less than thrilled at our show of comradery.

On the way home, the DJ on the radio reminded us that tonight was the lunar eclipse as she played the entire Dark Side of the Moon album.  We looked out the car window, and sure enough…there it was in all it’s glory.  I’d like to tell you that I at least got a decent shot of that, but no such luck.  Go look at Carol’s amazing shot right HERE. Seriously, go peek.

‘Cause all I have is an iffy shot of driftwood…

You can tell it’s driftwood…right?

That’s what days at the beach are like for us year round!

Our dog will dash up and down the beach, doing her very best impersonation of a greyhound and then crash into our legs from time to time, almost knocking us over.

  2. Carol says:

Hey, we used to live in San Diego too (Oceanside, actually), from ’88 to ’93. Were we neighbors there, too?!

It was a gorgeous day out there for a beach trip…but you guys are NUTS! IT”S FREEZING!!! GAH! Okay…now that I’ve said that…did I mention….NUTS?!?!?!? :O) And I am so glad that school is back in tomorrow for a whopping 2 days this week. Sometimes I kinda wonder what the heck the school board was smoking when they came up with the calendar.

I beg to differ. Your shots are a wonderful representation of the day.

The image to which you liked truly is awesome. I trudged out onto my snow covered balcony every ten minutes or so to get shots of the eclipse last night. I now know I really REALLY need a tripod.

Well, if those are you “bad” photos, then I’m in trouble, because I thought they were pretty good, and most of mine pale in comparison! 😉

I did go over to peek at that lunar eclipse photo, it’s beautiful!

Dogs love the beach! I just got back from CA, Huntington Dog Beach, you can see the video at my blog about my photo book Salty Dogs!

  7. That cracked me up–I’m in San Diego, and you’re right, I think it’s freezing at the beach right now. When I was a kid we used to start swimming in the ocean in March, now I won’t even do it in August!

At least you weren’t fighting crowds! And I always love photos of discontented teenagers–they make me feel at home.!

Even in winter a trip to the beach is a good time.

I went outside to get a look at the eclipse last night but the clouds had already rolled in so no luck. Then it started sleeting.

  9. I always loved the beach in winter (when I lived near a beach). I enjoyed the solitude. So much nicer than when the hordes of summer vacationers took over!

LOL add a wet dog that wants to snuggle and cuddle into that circle and your daughter would have been really happy. Too funny. The pictures are great though. I can definitely tell the last one is driftwood. Definitely 🙂

I really liked these photos! 🙂

Your post is always like a breath of fresh air. Love your humor and slant on life. The beach on a winter day is always fun but it makes my nose run…

I love that she drew a circle around herself to sulk! And that you busted that circle.

Did yo go to Carmel California? My best friend lived and grew up there. I want to go there some day, just to have a look. And look at the library and museums too. I miss her alot.
    I love your pictures…so relaxing 🙂

Loved your shots!! Would have traded vacation spots with you in a heartbeat. I understand the teen moment, what a great shot. The perfect shot.

Hey.. I like your photo’s. I remember driving over to Ocean Shores and about when we were kids — and people getting stuck on the beach because they drove down by the water.

(This summer, I want to go up to the peninsula — along the straight.)
